What is PERC?

Using PERC (Passivated Emitter Rear Cell) technology means adding an additional dielectric passivation layer on the back side of the cell. As light energy hits a standard solar cell, not all energy is absorbed by it, where a small portion of the light passes through the cell without being converted into usable energy. Furthermore the rear side passivation layer on a PERC solar cell functions as a power reflector, that reflects the excess light back to the solar cell for a second absorption phase, resulting in higher solar cell efficiency.

Imagine a solar cell is a motorway, where electrons are crossing the cell-like cars. The more traffic (current) can flow on the motorway, the more energy is produced. In a conventional solar cell, the permanent recombination of electrons is blocking the flow – like traffic jams on a motorway. The additional PERC passivation layer creates new ways, that help to reduce the traffic of electrons and thereby enable an unhindered current flow.

Furthermore, PERC technology absorbs more light and has a higher internal reflection than standard cells. Electrons are produced on several levels according to the wavelength. Shorter wavelengths (blue light) produce more electrons on upper cell levels; longer wavelengths (red light) however produce more electrons on the lower cell level or cross the wafer without producing current.

WHICH ADVANTAGES DOES PERC HAVE?

PERC modules have higher efficiencies because they reflect light that modules with standard solar cells cannot reflect and at the same time the PERC modules absorb more light.
The high performances lead to lower system costs, increase the energy yield and thereby the profitability of the photovoltaic system. These modules are especially interesting for people with limited roof space.
