WINAICO supplies 2.6 MW of modules to Europe’s largest crowdfunded solar project

WINAICO, Taiwan’s largest PV module brand, was selected to be the module supplier for a large housing project in Berwickshire, Scotland. The plan to install solar on almost 750 residential roofs across Berwickshire Housing Association (BHA) is Europe’s largest ever crowdfunded solar project. So far over £1 million of the £3.1 million target has already been raised since fundraising began on 31 October 2014.

2.6 MW of WINAICO solar modules are being installed by Oakapple Berwickshire Plc, a company set up by Oakapple Renewable Energy Ltd of Leeds and Edison Energy Ltd of Glasgow. The company, based in Leeds, has been crowdfunding using the investment site Abundance Generation, which allows people to invest in green projects. At present, over 90 systems are operating with an installed capacity of more than 300kWp.

The ‘Oakapple Berwickshire’ scheme sees Oakapple Renewable Energy in its first partnership with Glasgow-based Edison Energy designed to install and operate a pipeline of Scottish Housing Association projects.

“We are very happy that an experienced company like Oakapple has chosen our product to supply Europe’s largest crowdfunded solar project” said Marc Ortmanns, Head of WINAICO European Sales & Marketing. Oakapple Managing Director, David Cockayne, commented on why they chose WINAICO modules, “WINAICO never compromises on quality and provides a great insurance package for commercial projects such as this one which is why we selected their panel over their competitors.”

WINAICO launches patented SiC HeatCap technology and 300 W series at PV Expo

WINAICO, Taiwan's largest PV module brand, launches patented HeatCap technology with SiC (silicon carbide) at PV Expo 2015. HeatCap with SiC improves the reliability of silicon based solar cells, and protect them from micro-cracks induced by external stresses, such as handling errors and wind stresses. The SiC technology can be applied to WINAICO's high efficiency PERC, 48-cell modules to provide the perfect combination of high energy output and reliability. WINAICO's high efficiency module with HeatCap technology was recently awarded the Taiwan Excellent PV Award by the Bureau of Energy. Also on display at WINAICO's booth is the world's first PERC-based, 300 W, WSP-300M6 (60-cell) high efficiency module. WINAICO is able to control the CTM loss to below 1%, and reach the market leading efficiency using current generation 4 bus bar solar cells.

WINAICO's internal evaluation showed evidences of HeatCap improving the ultimate stress a silicon solar cell can withstand before breaking up to 18.12%. WINAICO also worked with Taiwan's leading research institute, ITRI, to evaluate the reliability of HeatCap technology through Dynamic Mechanical Load (DML) and local hot spot tests. HeatCap and reference modules were put through DML tests of 1000 cycles each at 1000 Pa, 2000 Pa, 3000 Pa sequentially, and verified by electroluminescence (EL) pictures. Compared to the reference module, the HeatCap module had significantly less micro-cracks after each stage of DML tests. Local hot spot tests provided evidence of HeatCap's improvement in heat dissipation to reduce the solar cell temperature compared to reference cells. HeatCap can be used to solve the heating issue common to modules with black back sheets, and improve energy outputs of all-black modules in warmer environments.

"PV Expo is an opportunity to demonstrate how WINAICO modules add value to the Japanese market. With the launch of the micro-crack preventing HeatCap technology with SiC, WINAICO continues to be a technology leader and differentiates our product offering with greater reliability to the end customers. Our modules can be found all over Japan, not to mention the Commercial and Utility scale installations in Hokkaido and Ishigaki island", said Loftur Thorarinsson, Representative Director of WINAICO Japan K.K. "Our customers appreciate WINAICO for the top quality PV modules that we provide, and the recently acquired JET certificate assures our Japanese customers that WINAICO modules conform to the highest quality standard required by the local market."

Solar energy powers innovation at Cook Medical

World leading medical device manufacturer, Cook Medical, has taken one giant leap to reduce its carbon footprint and power bill, by installing a 706 square metre field of solar panels on its roof in Brisbane. The installation is the largest of its kind in Asia Pacific, utilising advanced solar panel technology called PERC (passivated emitter- rear contact).

"We have a roof and lots of sun, so harnessing solar power was an obvious solution to reduce costs for us and the environment. The investment was significant, but even so we expect our solar panels will pay for themselves within 15 years," Barry Thomas, Cook Medical Vice President and Managing Director of Cook Medical Australia said. "Using alternative energy to power manufacturing still isn't mainstream, but given the benefits it's completely logical. We've chosen an extremely efficient technology, and the panels are now offsetting on average 30 per cent of the power we use each day."

The installation of the panels was finished in January, and was carried out by local company, Positronic Solar, who recommended and installed the custom-design. John Inglis, Director of Positronic Solar was impressed by Cook Medical's commitment to alternative energy. "When we put in our proposal we were very honest about what was achievable and the best technology for Cook Medical's solar panels. They appreciated our straightforward approach, and chose an effective solution to offset a significant majority of their power use," said Mr Inglis. "The design utilises Schneider-Electric inverters and WINAICO high efficiency PERC 280 W monocrystalline modules – some of the most advanced technology available. The panels are not only efficient even in low light, but also perform very well at high temperatures – which is of course very important here in Queensland."

Cook Medical Australia was established in 1979 and has grown to a headcount of over 500 people at their headquarters in Eight Mile Plains where its headquarters are based.

Cook Medical

Founded in 1963, Cook Medical pioneered many of the medical devices now commonly used to perform minimally invasive medical procedures throughout the body. Today, the company integrates medical devices, drugs and biologic grafts to enhance patient safety and improve clinical outcomes. Since its inception, Cook has operated as a family-held private corporation.
